Opportunity Information: Apply for NIGER STATE WPS 2024 003 V2
The U.S. Embassy in Niamey is offering a grant to strengthen women-led community policing in the Maradi Region of Niger. This initiative aims to enhance women’s role in security decision-making, particularly in response to rising armed banditry and transnational organized crime along the Niger-Nigeria border following the July 2023 coup.
Before the coup, women leaders had secured representation on the Maradi Regional Security Council through the U.S.-funded “Women Preventing Violent Extremism” project. However, the political upheaval led to their removal, necessitating renewed efforts to institutionalize their involvement in security governance.
The proposed projects should focus on integrating women into community policing and security decision-making by 2026. Applicants are encouraged to engage with existing trained women leaders and avoid redundant training efforts. Suggested activities include:
- Conducting assessments of gender inclusion in community policing - Developing strategies for gender-inclusive security decision-making - Holding advocacy meetings to push for policy implementation - Establishing gender-inclusive peace monitoring initiatives - Organizing public awareness campaigns on gender inclusion in security
Close collaboration with Nigerien authorities, such as the Ministry of Interior’s Stabilization Unit and the High Authority for the Consolidation of Peace (HACP), is essential. The selected organization should have a strong history of gender inclusion in peacebuilding and experience working with national or local authorities. A project advisory group will ensure coordination among stakeholders through quarterly meetings.
Eligible applicants include not-for-profit organizations, think tanks, and civil society groups, with preference given to Nigerien organizations, particularly women-led groups based in Diffa Region.Apply for NIGER STATE WPS 2024 003 V2
